Apparently, that’s local Austin psych-rockers (and former Houstonians) Ume. A growing band just about to break out, they secured a beautiful opening spot for Cloud Nothings and Portugal. The Man at The Mohawk early on the first Sunday of the fest. Ume immediately won me over with their raucus bursts of guitar-driven art rock, with front woman Lauren Larson threatening to take the whole thing off the rails with the abuse of her guitar strings.

Still, underneath this Ume possesses an air of intelligence and depth rare in a genre known primarily for its copious drug use. When it comes to art, psychedelia, and rock and roll, it doesn’t get much better.”

THE ROAD TO THE NEW RECORD

For almost two years, we’ve been touring non-stop, supporting Phantoms, writing, demoing and road-testing new songs.  Finally… the opportunity Ume has been working towards for years is here.

On Sept 30th, we are going into the studio with Grammy-winning producer Adam Kasper to make the album we’ve always dreamed of.  Adam has worked with bands like Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age (Songs for the Deaf), Cat Power (You Are Free), and Foo Fighters (Nothing Left To Lose).  And he believes in Ume.

We are excited!  But we are also an independent band self-funding the making of our record.

WE COULD USE YOUR HELP

We set up a Kickstarter campaign to help cover some of the costs of making this album AND to give those of you who have stood by us a chance to be involved.

By donating $10 or more you will get the first download of the new album + exclusive updates, first listens, and a behind the scenes look at the making of this record at the famous Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, WA.

We are also making backer-exclusive gifts like hand-screened t-shirts, beautiful screen-prints, signed vinyl, and handmade cymbal clocks.  These limited edition rewards are available only to Kickstarter supporters.

There are also chances to get to know us more — personal lessons and songs, letters, unreleased music, and fun packages for the guitarist, drummer, collector and even food lover.  There’s even a chance to relive Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations with the band or to get a personalized guitar.

THE GOAL

Our goal of $7500 covers less than 1/3rd of our actual recording costs. Anything over our goal will be an immense help in funding this record, paying for the studio and engineer, covering mixing, travel costs, and helping us fix our gear. If we do cover all the recording costs, any extra funds will go towards finally escaping the clutches of our financially destructive van curse!

While in Austin during SXSW 2012, Tony attended Ume’s packed performance at Hotel Vegas for the Brooklyn Vegan SXSW party. To quote Bourdain, it was “… a shitload of rawk in a tiny little room!” Bourdain also enjoyed some hardcore eats with the local trio at the Barley Swine restaurant. Check out the teaser for the Season Premiere below featuring the band.
